The Spirit Lake Internment Camp Exhibit
Between 1914 and 1920 thousands of Ukrainian Canadians and other Europeans were unjustly imprisoned as “enemy aliens” during Canada’s first national internment operations in the Spirit Lake Internment Camp.
The mission of the Spirit Lake Corporation is to conserve and protect the heritage and memory, and to erect a historical interpretation center focusing on the Spirit Lake Concentration Camp and the cultural heritage of the colonization of La Ferme and Amos region.
The Camp Spirit Lake Corporation desires to make known the history of the Ukrainian pioneers who participated in the colonisation of the Abitibi- Temiscamingue region, and to render homage to the Ukrainians for their courage and tenacity. The Corporation is dedicating the interpretation center to their memory.
This exhibit examines the sojourn of the Ukrainian prisoners in the internment camp during the First World War, and the way of life of the Ukrainians in the Abitibi- Temiscamingue region.

Entre 1914 et 1920, des milliers de Canadiens ukrainiens et d’autres Européens furent injustement emprisonnés en tant que « sujets de pays ennemis » au cours des premières opérations d’internement menées par le Canada au Camp de concentration de Spirit Lake.
La Corporation Camp Spirit Lake a pour mission de conserver la mémoire de ces événements. Elle se propose d 'établir un centre d’interprétation du Camp de concentration de Spirit Lake et de protéger l’héritage culturel de la colonisation de La Ferme et de la région d’Amos.
La Corporation souhaite faire connaître l’histoire des pionniers ukrainiens qui ont participé à la colonisation de la région de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue et rendre hommage à leur courage et à leur ténacité. Le Centre d’interprétation sera dédié à leur mémoire.
L’exposition explore, d’une part, le séjour des prisonniers ukrainiens dans le camp d’internement durant la Première Guerre mondiale et, d’autre part, le mode vie des Ukrainiens de la région de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
